Setting off for Newport
When my girlfriend and I found out we were expecting a baby, we celebrated with a spontaneous road trip to Newport, Rhode Island! Just a 4.5-hour drive from Philadelphia, this charming seaside town was the perfect getaway for our little pre-baby adventure. Staying at the Hammetts Hotel put us right in the heart of the action on the waterfront, offering incredible seaside views and that classic New England hospitality. The salty air and the sound of the docks provided the perfect backdrop for our celebration.

Accommodations and Dining Highlights
Newport is a culinary paradise, especially if you love fresh catches. We spent our afternoons wandering through Bowen’s Wharf, where the smell of fresh seafood is everywhere. From the legendary creamy clam chowder to overstuffed lobster rolls enjoyed right on the harbor, every meal felt like a celebration. We even found some hidden gems tucked away in the historic cobblestone side streets that offered a more intimate dining experience. If you’re looking for more travel inspiration or want to see how I document these journeys, feel free to work with me on your next project.

Exploring the Majestic Cliff Walk & Historic Mansions
One of the highlights of our trip was strolling along the breathtaking Cliff Walk. This 3.5-mile coastal path is world-famous for a reason—it offers a unique vantage point where the rugged Atlantic coastline meets the manicured lawns of Gilded Age mansions. We spent hours admiring the architectural marvels like The Breakers and Rosecliff, imagining the lavish parties that once took place there. The contrast between the crashing waves and the silent, majestic stone structures is something you have to see in person. As I prepare for Fatherhood 2.0 at 50, these moments of quiet adventure and historical reflection are more precious than ever.
Sailing and Harbor Views
You can’t visit the “Sailing Capital of the World” without spending time by the water. We loved watching the classic wooden schooners and modern yachts navigate the harbor. Whether you’re taking a sunset cruise or just watching the boats from a bench at Brenton Point State Park, the maritime energy of Newport is infectious. It’s a place that encourages you to slow down and appreciate the horizon—a perfect mindset to have before welcoming a new member to the family.
Newport, RI is a treasure trove of sights, tastes, and history. As we look forward to family adventures after the baby arrives, this trip will always hold a special place in our hearts. If you have any questions about our itinerary or want to chat about travel, don’t hesitate to contact me.
